Roof Garden Diary: January 2016

Normally the green spears of snowdrops are peeping through by now but this year there is no sign of them in New Lanark Roof Garden!  Probably the heavy rain and unusually warm temperatures throughout December don’t suit these winter beauties.  However, a rainy day is the perfect time to visit the Roof Garden mosaic — go through the glass door into the attic space next to the lift.  The mosaic design includes the woodpecker shown in the photograph.  Soon the sound of real woodpeckers drumming at dawn on hollow tree trunks will be echoing through the surrounding woodland.

“They will be surrounded by gardens, have abundance of space in all directions to keep the air healthy and pleasant: they will have walks and plantations before them, and well cultivated grounds, kept in good order, as far as the eye can reach”.
(Robert Owen, 1817)
