Ted’s October at New Lanark

Ted’s October at New Lanark

Hi everyone! I can’t believe it’s almost the end of October now – where has this year gone? We’ve been really busy at New Lanark with our Book Festival, the October week and getting all set for our Spook-tacular Halloween events!

Like I said, we kicked off the month with the first ever ‘New Lanark Book Festival’ with lots of author sessions for adults and children to enjoy! Here’s a photo of my helping out author Chae Strathie (who used to live in New Lanark!)  at his Book Festival session.

Once upon a time…

We had great weather here at New Lanark over the October Week! The site was busy with lots of people enjoying walks to the Falls of Clyde and taking part in our Daily Tours and Autumn Craft Workshops!

Next Friday (30th October) Nancy Mangum McCaslin from New Harmony in Indiana will be giving a free talk at New Lanark! She’ll be discussing Robert Owen and his family in New Harmony, with a focus on Jane Blaffer Owen CBE – the wife of Kenneth Dale Owen, Robert Owen’s great-great- grandson.

I’m getting so excited for my first Halloween at New Lanark! On Saturday 31st October we’re hosting a fun day of crafts, games and storytelling in the ‘old gift shop’ at New Lanark which will be transformed into a spooky cellar for the day. Entry is just £3 per child and you can get in free with a New Lanark Visitor Centre ticket! At nighttime there will be Spooky Tours of New Lanark Village, but these have been really popular and are almost all sold out!

Is there something on my face? I feel like there’s something on my face!

So that’s what I’ve been up to in October! As November rolls around we’ll be getting ready for our Christmas Experience at New Lanark which opens on Saturday 28th November!

I’ll hopefully see you soon 🙂

New Lanark set to host Spook-tacular Halloween events!

New Lanark set to host Spook-tacular Halloween events!

On Saturday 31st October, New Lanark will be hosting a full day of Halloween activities for the whole family to enjoy.

During the day children will be able to enjoy Halloween themed crafts & games within the “old gift shop”, which will be transformed into a spooky cellar for the day. There will also be a Storyteller with plenty of Halloween tales, and a photo competition for the best costume! Entrance is £3 per child, or £1.50 with a New Lanark Visitor Centre ticket with the main activities running from 12-5pm.

Ruth Beattie, New Lanark Learning Officer said “We run craft workshops for kids throughout the year, so we’re really excited to be planning some crafts especially for Halloween. Kids will be able to make and take home their own pumpkin, skull & ghost masks as well as taking part in fun games like Broomstick races and ‘pin the hat on the witch’”

Once the sun has set, New Lanark will be hosting a series of Spooky Tours of the village to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve! The ghost of one of New Lanark’s Millworkers, Mary, will be coming back especially for Halloween to lead the tours around the village visiting the School for Children, textile machinery floor and Robert Owen’s House. Mary will tell stories of people she used to know at New Lanark, local superstitions and some of the history of the village. Photo 3
Evelyn Whitelaw, New Lanark Events Officer said “New Lanark was formed over 200 years ago and thousands of people have worked and lived here over the years, so who knows who you may meet on one of the Spooky Tours!”

The tours will be leaving at 5.15pm, 6.15pm, and 7.15pm and will last around 45 minutes. There are limited places available so booking is essential for the tours at a cost of £5 per person. To book a place visit www.newlanark.org or call 01555 661345. (Lines open Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm)

Ted’s September at New Lanark

Ted’s September at New Lanark

Hello everyone!

Ted here again to let you know what I’ve been up to at New Lanark this September. After I came back my holidays (in Bar-bear-dos) I was straight back to work at New Lanark’s Doors Open Weekend! We had lots of people come down to the site over the weekend to explore buildings in New Lanark not usually open to the public. You’ll never guess who was there too – David Dale and Richard Arkwright had travelled forward in time from the 1800’s to give free tours to visitors! Doors Open Days is co-ordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust, so you can visit their website to find out about more events across Scotland.

As of yesterday (Wednesday 23rd September) it’s now officially Autumn! It’s one of my favourite seasons here at New Lanark, you really don’t want to miss visiting here and seeing all the beautiful colours – just like Alan Knox has captured in this amazing photograph of the Falls of Clyde! From the New Lanark Book Festival, to fun kids craft workshops during the October break there’s lots going on here this Autumn. Just visit our website to read all about it!

Autumn is here!

As I mentioned New Lanark is hosting its very own Book Festival at the start of October! From Thursday 1st – Sunday 4th over 20 brilliant authors will be speaking at the event on loads of interesting topics like Scottish History, Textiles, Scottish food (mmmm) & Scotch Whisky! Well-known authors like Christopher Brookmyre and James Robertson will be taking to the stage, along with up-and-coming novelists like Jonathan Whitelaw and Mandy Haggith. You can view the full list of author sessions here and get your tickets here!

I’m a bit of a bookworm, don’t you know…

The Schools in South Lanarkshire will be taking a break from 25th – 28th September, and we’ll be running Daily Tours at New Lanark on each of these days at 2pm. It’s included in a Visitor Centre ticket, and will give you the chance to find out lots more about the fascinating history of New Lanark.

Last but not least, New Lanark will be hosting our very own Halloween Spook-tacular event on Saturday 31st October with creepy crafts, storytelling & spooky night time tours! Come along if you dare 🙂
