Ted’s Christmas at New Lanark!

Ted’s Christmas at New Lanark!

Hi everyone!

Ted here again for this month’s bumper Christmas Blog with everything I’ve been up to at New Lanark over November and December!

During November we were really busy getting everything set up for Christmas, so it was nice to end the month with a extra-special day! On Friday 27th November the New Lanark textiles team launched the world’s first ever Organic Tartan at a special event in the Mill Shop. The tartan was registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans in September 2015, and the entire process from sheep to shop has been certified as 100% organic by the Soil Association. I sported a special bow tie made out of the Organic Tartan fabric for the event, which I think looks very dashing indeed! The tartan will be sold exclusively in the New Lanark Mill Shop through a range of bags, purses, wallets, accessories and cosy throws!

On Monday 30th November New Lanark joined in with the Scottish Government’s nationwide St.Andrew’s Day celebrations by lighting up the famous Falls of Clyde blue! I think the photo looks pretty cool, and some of the other iconic places lit up looked amazing as well – like Edinburgh Castle and The Kelpies!

In case you hadn’t realised – it’s almost Christmas! On Saturday 28th November the New Lanark Christmas Experience opened its doors and kicked off the first weekend of the fantastic event. Tickets are really good value, and for £9.50pp you can meet Santa in his grotto, enjoy the photo/craft zone and go on the Spirit of Christmas Ride! If you’d like to pack more into your day for £11.50pp you can do all of that plus see our festive pantomime Sister Ella’s Slippers – I went to see it on Saturday and I’d highly recommend it!  New Lanark’s Santa’s Grotto was also recently included in a list of the Top 10 places to meet Santa in the UK, wow!

Giddy up Dasher, Prancer & Vixen!

After all that excitement I thought it would be nice to treat myself to the Mill Café’s Festive Afternoon Tea! They’re running it Monday – Fridays in December from 12-4pm, and it’s only £10.50pp for all of this! You need to book in advance so best to call 01555 667205 to get your place reserved 🙂

Roof Garden Diary – November 2015

Roof Garden Diary – November 2015

A cool  wet  summer  followed  by  a warm,  settled  spell in September and October  resulted in a beautiful display of autumn colour in and around New Lanark Roof Garden.   The woodlands on the hillside overlooking   the  village  were  originally planted in the early 19th century by New Lanark’s pioneering mill manager, Robert Owen, so that his millworkers could enjoy walks in the fresh air in an attractive natural environment.   New Lanark Roof Garden offers a great view of the trees, and this autumn they provided a splendid backdrop in russet and gold!

Roof Garden Diary: October 2015

Roof Garden Diary: October 2015

Autumn is always a colourful time in New Lanark Roof Garden!  The highlight this month is surely the curved border with its riot of beautiful anemones glowing pink and purple in the slanting sunlight.  These plants are real toughies that can stand up well to Scotland’s climate.  The swallows have now disappeared to spend winter in Africa, but the autumn song of the robin trills out from the trees in the village below, and a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly made an appearance in the warm spell at the start of the month.

Roof Garden Diary: December 2014

Roof Garden Diary: December 2014

The autumn has been mild with the first frosts arriving only at the start of December. By this time in 2012, the fountain was frozen over and New Lanark Roof Garden coated in white frost. This year, however, the little reindeer are still able to nibble the grass and drink from the flowing fountain!

The darker nights bring stars, so keep an eye on our website towards the end of the year for details of our Stargazing Live event on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd March 2015. December is a good month to see meteor showers wherever you are. The Geminid shower is due on 13-14th December and is expected to peak at 120 meteors per hour. Look out also for the Ursid shower around 22 and 23 December. A good time to look is just after dusk.

Roof Garden Diary: October / November 2014

Roof Garden Diary: October / November 2014

The fresh white Japanese anemones are the last of this year’s flowers in New Lanark Roof Garden.  They have looked stunning  against the backdrop of the autumn trees above the village.   Signs of the season are all around.  A robin sings from a nearby Scots Pine tree, and overhead huge skeins of geese have been seen gliding in V-shaped formation high up over New Lanark  on their way to warmer places. There’s lots to enjoy before the winter sets in!

Resident Robin Roof Garden Diary: December 2012

Resident Robin Roof Garden Diary: December 2012

Cheep …  cheep … chirrup …   I’m the New Lanark Roof Garden robin!   I bet you didn’t know that reindeer could fly?  There I was, perched on a bare twig, with my feathers puffed out to keep myself warm.  Jack Frost had already tiptoed across the Roof Garden and worked his magic on the fountain, changing the water into rock.  Then, imagine my surprise when five tiny reindeer, made of sparkling light, came floating down from the sky and landed on the grass nearby!  They said they were very tired as they had flown all the way from the North Pole. The Man Who Looks After the Reindeer will be at New Lanark every weekend and on Monday 24 December so you can visit him.  Hey!  Please put out some crumbs and fresh water for me and my friends this winter.  I know you’ll be stuffing YOUR faces …   Happy Christmas!
